Why is source separation important?
Separating waste makes it possible to recover useful materials and save natural resources, energy and water, and to cut emissions.
Putting a plastic bottle in the yellow bin instead of the general waste bin may seem like a tiny gesture, but it is the first step of a system that is essential to reducing our impact on the environment. At home or wherever you go, separating waste correctly is key to improving our consumption system. If we separate what can be recycled from what cannot, we minimise the volume of waste in landfills, prevent recyclables from being contaminated by other fractions, and do our part as citizens to look after our surroundings.
Separating at the point of collection (what we technically call source separation) is a key part of the recycling process, and one you can contribute to. With it, we can achieve:
Conservation of natural resources
When products and materials are recycled, the natural resources they contain can be reused and do not have to be obtained again to make them. By reducing the use of renewable and non-renewable resources, the need to extract more falls and the soil and land can regenerate.
Saving water and energy
Whether we recycle or reuse, fewer virgin products have to be made, so the energy and water needed for extraction, transport and processing are saved. That also means a reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions these processes produce.
Caring for the planet
Separating waste correctly prevents the destruction of animal habitats. It also reduces the waste that would end up polluting the ocean. In addition, some items, such as batteries, need special treatment because they can take centuries to break down and, while they do, release toxic substances into the environment. A simple gesture therefore helps look after the planet and your health.
New jobs
Recycling creates local jobs, ensuring decent working conditions and opportunities in all populated areas. It creates employment for those who manage waste so that it can be reused. This boosts economic growth while moving towards a circular economy.
Now that you know the benefits of separating waste correctly, you can share them with anyone who still has doubts. If you don’t know where to throw away a product, you can check the residuonvas website, available in Catalan, Spanish and English.
