Sustainability and Innovation at MDF 2023

We worked with the organization of the Monegros Desert Festival to reduce its environmental impact. During the 2023 edition, a collection of furniture for the chill-out areas was developed using recycled plastics.

The challenge

The Monegros Desert Festival organization aims to adopt more sustainable measures to mitigate the environmental impact generated by this festival.

In the arid desert of Monegros, in Huesca, the Monegros Desert Festival (MDF) takes place, where over 50,000 attendees enjoyed more than twenty-two hours of partying in the 2023 edition. Events of this magnitude generate large amounts of waste. At Prewaste, we faced the significant challenge of providing a sustainable experience to minimize its impact on the natural environment.

The prewaste solution

The Sustainability Team at Prewaste worked closely with the MDF organization, supporting its transformation towards a more responsible model. By quantifying and analyzing the environmental impact derived from hosting a festival of this scale, we were able to identify potential points for change and propose measures to reduce it. We collaborated across our Consulting, Training, Communication, and Innovation departments, focusing on five key categories for the festival:

1. Segregation operations
2. Resource management
3. Training strategy + Social Media and signage
4. Calculation of environmental metrics
5. Circular economy projects

We were present at all stages of the festival to provide comprehensive support: during its preparation, on-site during its development, and after it concluded.

PRE-FESTIVAL

– Analysis of previous editions
– Sustainability plan
– Actions to be taken by the organization regarding sustainability
– Distribution of containers
– Study of selective collection fractions
– Resource management plan
– Communication support, designing signage, informative and educational materials, and a communication strategy for sustainability improvements on social media
– Waste analysis for incorporation into circular economy projects
– Design of operations for waste segregation

DURING THE FESTIVAL

– On-site sustainability team: the Sustainability Team
– Supervision of the measures adapted for the event
– Training for workers on sustainability and agreed sustainability operations
– Data collection for environmental analysis and evaluation of the action plan

POST-FESTIVAL

– Drafting of the impact report
– Analysis of all measures taken
– Assessment of their success
– Quantification of the environmental impact through carbon footprint calculation
– Reevaluation for improvements

• Development of pieces from our materials for furniture and/or textiles
• Design of furniture and/or textiles
• Production of the products and delivery for use in the next edition

The Monegros Desert Festival 2023 served to implement innovative initiatives such as the transformation of plastic waste into recycled furniture.
